Cody ~ 9.10.13

1) Back in the day...I used to play fetch with Cody, our dog, in the backyard. Often, I'd bounce the ball and he'd jump to catch it in his mouth. One time, he jumped so high he did a flip. I could never get him to do that trick again.
2) Back in the day...Cody would jump over the fence and our neighbor would bring him home, or he would just show up at the front door.
3) Back in the day...dad added a three-foot extension to the wooden fence in the sideyard to keep Cody from jumping over it.
4) Back in the day...Cody ran away and didn't come back for sixteen months.  I used to say, "Cody's here, Cody's here" out loud while sitting in the dining room reading books on Greek and Roman mythology. After a while no one would believe me. Dad even took down the extension to the fence. But one stormy night, Cody came back home, ragged and worn, a wet and dirty dog. We'd no idea where he'd been all this time, but there he was, wagging his fluffy tail. Perhaps reading mythology made me appear as Cassandra did to others. My family learned to not believe my lies. But my fortune was that no one could tell, as I would look them in the eye and fib.
5) Back in the day...my dad put a long chain on the collar of our dog, Cody, who had run away before, so he would have length to wander about the paved sideyard.
6) Back in the day...my brother told me to run around front to see if Cody was okay when he saw the taut chain over the fence. To his credit I was a fast runner. We had our Keeshond cremated that night. I was fast, but no one can outrun death.
