Just because you can means
nothing other than this
you are able to do
as you please since the law
for whatever reason
does not apply to you
somehow you are above
the law you own a gun
though you still pay taxes
and thus as citizen
are neither king nor queen
in the land of your birth
privileged to shoot and kill
without need to punish
you act as if the gun
and the badge made of tin
gave you the right to harm
indiscriminately
the power you carry
comes from those you protect
or allegedly serve
but you wear your status
on your sleeve where your heart
and passion for hunting
criminals like wildlife
become conflated mixed
in the black bag of tricks
you use to wield power
unlike a sorcerer
or a stage magician
you make death apparent
frustratingly too real
with a vise-like choke hold
that takes my breath away
